Alginates are plant biopolymers extracted from the family of brown algae – the laminaria – the properties of which were first discovered by the seaweed gatherers of Brittany, known as goémoniers in French.
Sailors and algae harvesters had noticed that the algae produced a substance which, when applied to a wound, stopped its bleeding and speeded up healing.
From 1949, Laboratoires Brothier harnessed the thickening properties of these laminaria, transforming them into « therapeutic » fibres.
In order to ensure complete manufacturing reproducibility and total process control, Brothier has developed specific high-technology equipment.
The production and control teams are highly specialised, and proudly perpetuate the Brothier know-how in the design and manufacture of alginates.
Preserving natural resources, reducing consumption, choosing suitable suppliers and partners, recycling and complying with the highest international standards is the everyday mission of every Brothier employee:
- Quality management (NF EN ISO 13485)
- Risk management (EN ISO 14 971)
- Directive 93/42 EEC concerning Medical Devices
- Safety trials (ISO 10993 series)
- Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)
- European Pharmacopoeia
- Sterilisation (ISO 11 137 serie)

Experimental research allows expertise to be enriched and provides access to the most advanced technologies.
BROTHIER works in close partnership with French Public Research.
It has only one goal: to offer ever safer and more effective solutions in order to simplify treatments and improve patient quality of life.
Clinical research is an intrinsic part of the Laboratoires Brothier culture.
This is the only way to guarantee the safety and efficacy of the products made available to healthcare professionals and patients.
These days, BROTHIER is continuing to pursue a vast clinical research programme to confirm the safety and efficacy of its products.
Tailored care by multidisciplinary teams is particularly important to help patients face wounds that can affect their physical and psychological integrity.
To provide the patient with better follow-up, in a hospital setting and a private practice setting, by surgeons and nurses, professionals must undergo training and continuously update their practices.
